QUICK ANSWER

Identify the exact attack that caused the failure; a monster’s base damage alone is not a strategy.

Monster pages list each known attack with its damage, form, effects and available range. When an exact radius or duration is missing, treat it as unknown and give the move more room until you have tested it.

01

WHAT TO DO

Name the attack, not only the monster

A caster, heavy creature or skeleton variant can have several attacks with different ranges and effects. Write whether the failure came from a projectile, area blast, grab, knockdown or melee sequence. Then open that attack on the exact monster page.

Undead Sorcerer’s Frostbolt deals 50 base damage with a 1.5 m blast radius. Congelation deals 20 base damage in a 5 m area.

02

WHAT TO DO

Treat base damage as the start of the hit

The displayed damage is before target defence and other modifiers. Body area, armour coverage, material resistance, blocking, parry, effects and current condition can change health actually lost.

Do not compare one monster’s health with one weapon number and assume the number of hits. Different moves, damage properties, defence phases and effect timing can break that simple division.

WHAT TO DO

Change one preparation decision

Use the identified attack to choose one response: more spacing for an area move, a shield or defensive test for a blockable sequence, a ranged option for dangerous approach, or armour coverage for the body area repeatedly hit. Avoid rebuilding every slot at once.

Return to a similar encounter and see whether that one problem improved. Spawn position, enemy group and behavior may differ in the next run, so judge the change across more than one attempt before rebuilding everything again.

Use the attack list to define an escape condition as well as an opening. If the dangerous move has an area, effect or approach pattern you cannot reliably handle, decide which doorway, corner or distance ends the attempt. Preparation includes knowing when the current encounter no longer matches the controlled test you planned.

BEFORE THE NEXT RUN

Check these four things before you leave

  1. Identify the exact attack.
  2. Read damage, range and effect together.
  3. Account for your defence layers.
  4. Change and test one response.

One last check before you leave

Check inventory counts, remaining durability, learned recipes, quest progress, random spawns and whether the intended route is open. Doing this before spending materials or setting off can save a wasted trip.
